The Punjab government under the leadership of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has introduced a groundbreaking initiative to provide free solar panels to eligible residents in Punjab. This new scheme, part of the Roshan Gharana Scheme is set to offer substantial savings on electricity bills and promote the use of renewable energy across the province.
Key Details of the Solar Panel Scheme
- Eligibility Criteria:
- CNIC Holders: The program is open to all residents of Punjab with a valid CNIC.
- Electricity Consumption: The scheme targets households with monthly electricity usage between 50 to 500 units.
- Solar Panel Distribution:
- For 50 to 100 units: 1 kW solar panels.
- For 200 to 300 units: 1.1 kW solar panels.
- For 300 to 400 units: 1.65 kW solar panels.
- For 500 units: 2.2 kW solar panels.
- Cost Coverage: Households with bills up to 200 units will receive solar panels and inverters at no cost. For those with bills between 200 and 500 units the government will cover 10% of the cost while the remaining 90% can be paid in interest-free installments.
- Application Process:
- SMS Method: Residents need to send an SMS to 8800 including their electricity bill reference number and CNIC number. Incorrect submissions may result in an invalid reference.

Important Points to Note
- Phased Rollout: The program will begin with an initial phase targeting 100,000 households with plans for expansion in subsequent phases.
- Eligibility Check: Only households with a single meter in their name are eligible. Applications from households with multiple meters or those registered under different names may be disqualified.
- Outstanding Loans: Households with outstanding loans or those listed as defaulters will not be eligible for the program.
